Hold a snap to the guide

These are one person's snaps from this year. Drag one onto the guide, or tap it. The guide reads what is actually in the photo: one face, your eyes, your head filling the oval, light from the front. Then pin it up; the guide decides which column.

Two sets of rules

The guide by the photo counter is strict because a passport photo has to prove who you are. A headshot only has to look like you, so some of its rules go and some stay.

At the counter

The passport guide, by the kiosk

  • aNeutral face. No smiling.
  • bNo glasses of any kind.
  • cPlain white background.
  • dHead fills the oval, chin to crown.
  • eEyes open and showing.
  • fOnly you in the frame.

At Fair Likeness

What the guide above checks

  • aSmile if you smile. We only print a smile we have seen in one of your snaps.
  • bGlasses you wear every day stay on. Sunglasses hide your eyes, so those snaps don't count.
  • cAny background. We replace it, and the tag says so.
  • dYour head fills half the frame or more. Smaller than that and we'd be inventing your face.
  • eEyes showing, lit from the front. Backlit snaps put your face in shadow.
  • fOne face per snap. Two and we'd start blending you with your friend.

Not for passports.

A passport, visa or ID photo has to be a real, unedited photo of you. Ours are made, so we never sell them for that, and the files say so in their details.

For your passport, use the camera at the counter.

Print your strip

Four portraits for four places: a team page, a dating profile, a speaker bio, and head and shoulders. We make them from the snaps you pinned and nothing else, so what you pin changes what we keep and what we have to guess. Tap a portrait's tag to read it, and tear off any that isn't you.

Your strip prints from

  • kitchen sets your skin tone
  • car shows the right side of your face
  • wedding crop is the only snap with your smile

Where the prints went

People send us the page their portrait ended up on. These are pinned up with their permission, tag and all.

What happens to your snaps

Deleted after seven days
Your snaps and the model made from them are deleted a week after the strip prints. Reprints after that need new snaps.
Never used to train anything else
Your face makes your portraits. It does not teach our system what people look like.
The tag goes with the file
Every file says in its details that it is a made portrait, and lists what we made up.
