Illustrative route model. Passenger loads are fixed at 45 lb and 55 lb, groceries at 30 lb. Your selected load is conservatively carried for the whole route. Range model: 720 Wh nominal, 648 Wh usable, 78 lb bike. Rolling use increases with payload and assist; climbing adds mass × gravity × elevation, with 75% efficiency. Wind, cold and tire pressure can reduce range.

A torque sensor asks how hard you're pushing. The mid-drive adds help through the same chain that your legs turn.

The drawn chain and wheels follow your cadence while this stage is visible. Modeled assistance is capped at 500 W and stops when cadence is zero. This is a pedal-assist concept, with no throttle. Range above also changes with assistance.

Make the
first ride
an empty one.

Get your saddle height and the pre-ride checks sorted before adding passengers. A test ride is part of the decision.

Starting saddle estimate: inseam × 0.883. A real fit requires checking knee bend, reach and balance. Setup estimate allocates five minutes per check. Passengers need suitable seats, helmets and adult supervision.

Less gas.
Still some
maintenance.

Charging is the small part. Tires, brake pads and a tune-up belong in the budget too. Use your own riding week.

Uses your selected route, 48 riding weeks, $0.16/kWh electricity and 85% charging efficiency. Fuel comparison excludes car insurance, depreciation, parking and bike repairs outside your allowance. No guaranteed savings.

Capacity is
only half
the question.

A bike that can carry the weight still needs room to stop and somewhere to park. Try those limits with your actual load.

Concept limits: 400 lb payload, including rider; 170 lb rear deck; 28 in handlebar width, 34 in with loaded panniers. Stopping model uses one second of reaction and friction-limited deceleration. It is not a safe-following-distance guarantee; real braking varies.
